Christian Holidays

Christian Holidays can be divided into two groups:

  1. Fixed Feasts
  2. Moveable feasts

The dates of some of the fixed feasts are:

January 6  -  Epiphany (sometimes celebrated the 1st Sunday after 2 January)
August 15  -  Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
November 1  -  All Saints Day
November 2  -  All Souls Day
December 24  -  Christmas Eve
December 25  -  Christmas Day
December 26  -  Boxing Day, St Stephen's Day (in Holland and Belgium known as "Second Christmasday".)

You should be aware that the old ortodox churches use the Julian Calendar. The old Orthodox Church uses the same dates for most Fixed feasts, but since the Julian Calendar is 13 days behind the Gregorian calendar (in the 20th and 21st century), the fixed feasts are celebrated 13 days later in the old Orthodox churches than in the Western Churches.

The dates of the moveable feasts are related to the date of pascha, or easter as this feast is called in other cultures and traditions. The date of pascha can be calculated using the pascha algorithm. The Julian Day Number of Pascha can be determined using pascha_jdn. An explanation of how to determine the dates of other moveable feasts is given in Feasts Related to Pascha.

The old Orthodox Church uses the same dates for most Fixed feasts and the same algorithms for the moveable feasts, but since the Julian Calendar is 13 days behind the Gregorian calendar (in the 20th and 21st century), the feasts are celebrated on different days in the old Orthodox churches and in the Western Churches.
