05-08-2006 TASK 4

After -again- a long wait on take off the wind dropped and the last task of the competition could start. Not many pilots took off immediately after window open but things wouldn't get much better and gradually all pilots left the ground. Conditions were better than the day before scattering the pilots around the route to goal with only one pilot who actually made it (Philippe Broers).

04-08-2006 TASK 3

After a long wait on the take off at Larouco - watching forest-fires popping up in virtually every direction- the wind finaly dropped and a 31.8km task was set. Unfortunately conditions turned out to be very poor with most pilots bombing out somewhere between take off and turnpoint one. Only 8 pilots made turnpoint one but couldn't get much further.

03-08-2006 NO TASK

Task cancelled due to strong winds.

02-08-2006 TASK 3 CANCELLED

With no clouds and a clearly visable inversion layer conditions promised no early start of a task. The first winddummies bombed out but conditions improved a bit and some winddummies could stay in the air. Suddenly increasing winds got them into a bit of trouble however, after some exciting moments two of them landed safely on the plateau to the left of launch, one other got safe on the ground further back on the plateau and the last went very slowly into the headwind towards the airstrip of Chaves (after pilots on launch formed a big arrow ponting in that direction) and landed safely just in front of it. Shortly after the task was cancelled.

01-08-2006 TASK 2

The day started with some rain and fully covered skies but it turned out to be very locally and it was flyable again in Chaves. Tasksetting was made a bit more difficult compared to the first task and conditions were not as good. Most of the pilots bombed out between the first and the second turnpoint caused by the increasing headwind in the direction of turnpoint 2. In the end 18 pilots made it into goal with Francois DeVilliers (South Africa) being the first followed by Pascal van Dijk (the first dutchman) after only 34 seconds. Philippe Broers was third in goal and the first belgian pilot. Clearly big succes for the Aircross Ultima 3 covering the first 4 places.

31-07-2006 TASK 1

A 44km downwind task was set with eventually 54 pilots in goal. Thanks to the marshalls on the small takeoff of Chavres (only two gliders at the time could be spread out) everything went smoothly and it was only due to the weak conditions in the beginning that pilots weren't eager to launch. On course conditions were very good with good climbs (and some nice stomach-turning downs as well) and a clear view on a big forest-fire (see picture below). For quite a few pilots it was their first time in goal and for some even their first task in a competition. Unfortunately some pilots left the startcylinder too early and two pilots forgot to switch on their tracklog.
The task was won by Paul Schmit in a smashing 59 minutes (being pushed by supposingly a very experienced local pilot flying relatively low and very fast) followed only 3 seconds later by Bjorn Skarpas. The supposingly local pilot in fact turned out to be Mickel Keizer (a dutch guy living in Switzerland) who is flying here for the first time and unfortunately was the one of the pilots who left the startcylinder too early). Frank van Renesse (4) was the first dutchman in goal, Philippe Broers the first belgian and Catherine Pirard (36) the first woman.
