FASA brochures

Because the spanish FASA brochures are so completely different from anything else I have, and certainly very nice too, here's a simple page specially devoted to them. Unfortunately, a large number is still lacking. Some that I have seen someplace but don't possess are shown in pale shades. I you have them, please email me!

Note that it is sometimes difficult to date the brochures, because so many details are different from the french berlines and fourgonnettes. Some key years are 1968, which saw the introduction of the second grille (although the first grille was used until 1977 (!) in Spain on the basic 4 and the furgonetas) and the 4-gearbox, and 1975, with the introduction of the third grille. Further, most brochures carry a code comprising the year, which is likely to be the year preceding the model year. For instance, the brochure with number 21005-1967 is clearly for the model year 1968. This usually holds, although there are exceptions: number 5467-1966 happens to be used for the 1966, 1967 and 1968 furgoneta brochures, which are nearly identical if not for the model year number on the license plates, and the 4-velocidades references.

1964 The introduction of the R4 took place early this year. On the left, the (large) introduction brochure for the Berline, below the small version. Note the special bumpers. On the right the cover of Velocidad magazine of February 1964, telling us 'The new R-4 is out!'. Inside, there are also photos of the Furgoneta (88,000 pesetas, the 'turismo' costs 84,000)

1965 This years brochure shows a model very similar to the one shown on the introduction brochure, only this time the model is named 'Super'. Obviously it shouldn't be confused with the Super known in France. Inside, apart from the Super, a 4L model is listed. The spanish Super would last until about 1976, when the Super was succeeded by the R1125TL. During this period and thereafter, the luxury model would always be accompanied by a basic one with basically less chrome parts.

1966 'El coche todo ventajas' or 'the all window car'. Apart from listing the Super, the 4 and the Parisienne are mentioned.

On the right hand side the first Furgoneta brochure I know of, carrying the same slogan: 'la furgoneta todo ventajas'.

still looking for the 1967 berline brochure

1967 Nearly the same Furgoneta brochure as last year, even the number on the back is the same, only the year on the license plate was changed to 1967. The Berlina brochure is probably the picture shown on the left.

1968 Whereas the R4 was introduced with a 2 year delay in Spain, the new grille is presented in the same year as in France. Except for the armrest, the model on the front page photo looks very similar to its french counterpart. In reality, many details are different like bumpers, rearview mirror and engine. The engine is probably the 813, here listed as having 850cc, but in reality with 852cc - it would be built into the spanish R4 until 1981 or 1982.

The Furgoneta brochure is rather similar to the 1967 one, only the new 4-speed gearbox is advertised. The bumpers, notably, are still the same as those used for the berline 1964-1967. They would be changed in 1969 for the furgoneta.

1969

1970 The same photo as the 1968 brochure, but differently styled.

A new design for the Furgoneta brochure, which is now in bright blue, and devoted exclusively to the elevated version (S for Sobre-elevada; this model was also exported to Spain as 'sûrélevée, with the same rectangular bumpers). The brochures for the next two years are basically the same but differ in number of pages.

1971 Two brochures known for 1971: a nice white one, and a hand drawn 3-page leaflet. Nothing new for the Furgoneta brochure.

still looking for the 1972 berline brochure

1972 Again, the same Furgoneta brochure (only the carga was changed from 400 to 425 kilos), and nothing for the Berline.

still looking for the 1973 berline brochure

1973 Both brochures for this year are high on my Wanted! list! The furgoneta brochure for this year shows that, in this year, all furgonetas were still equipped with the first grille, and the same bumpers as the berline. There are 3 versions: 4F, 4F S (sobreelevada) and 4F SA (sobreelevada acristalada). Only the Acristalada version has chrome wheel covers.

1974

1975 A surprise for this years Berline, as the basic version still carries the very first grille! The model in front is the Super version, with the -for Spain- familiar flat bumpers and indicator lights, and the rims with 10 ventilation holes. The grille is the black plastic one that was introduced in France in 1975, too. From now on, a series of very nice brochures starts, each completely different from the one the year before.

1976 Both berlina and furgoneta brochures for this year are highly Wanted! again!

1977 This is the last year for the R1125. The model shown on the brochure is very familiar to the Super on the 1975 brochure (although in fact it is the TL). The basic 4, shown inside the brochure, still has the first grille.

The three availabe furgoneta versions all have the first grille.

1978 The furgonetas now have the bi-colored indicator lights and black grille. The furgonetas apparently never carried the second grille! Also, they obtained the bumpers that would remain in use until the end of production: the well know front bumper that was introduced in France in 1968 (on the furgonetas they are grey however), and a tubular rear bumper. The three versions available in 1973 are still there.

1979. A model rather similar to the french R1126. Most of the outer details that were different from the introduction in 1964 until 1977 are now gone: same bumper, same indicator lights. On the other hand, the rims are still the same as in the preceding years, and the amount of chrome parts is still larger than on the french models (this would remain being the case until at least 1989). The engine is still the 852cc 813-02. Also striking is the fact that the FASA brochures never mention the GTL - was it ever sold in Spain? As far as I know, at least until 1989 only the TL was advertised as the top model. Below, a small foldout brochure for the same Furgoneta Acristalada.

1980 The two models in this brochure (4 and 4TL) both still have the 852cc engine

Note that, on the right hand side, the furgonetas (as well as those for the two preceding years) are a nice light yellow color, and have very similar advertisements on the side. Small foldout brochures exist for the Furgoneta and Furgoneta S, and, presumably but not proven yet, the SA.

still looking for the 1981 berline brochure

1981 The berline brochure for 1981 is very similar to the one published a year before, only the basic version ceased to be; only the TL remains. The Furgoneta brochure appears to be showing the Furgoneta 4F6 for the first time, 5 years after its introduction in France.

1982 This 1982 TL brochure shows for the first time the black strips that are so typical for spanish R4 between 1982 and 1989 (or 1992?). Although a TL, this model is equipped with the 1108cc engine (and the air inlet below the grille) that in France only the GTL (and F6) had. As the basic model was dropped in this brochure, the TL appears to be the only model available for the spanish market.

1983 This brochure is the last one mentioning FASA-RENAULT rather than just Renault. On the right hand side the small version for the Furgoneta A, similar to the small versions listed for 1979 and 1980.

1985 Nothing for this year, except that I have once seen the berline brochure in a nice mountain setting.

1986

1987 Nothing here except that I know the cover of the berline brochure: in the mountains again.

still looking for the 1987 furgoneta brochure

1988 One of the well known spanish R4-slogans is now used: 'su belleza es su mecánica'. Inside, maybe for the first time, some pictures are shown that are also known from the french brochures. At last, the nice aluminium strips around the rear reflectors are gone.

still looking for the 1988 furgoneta brochure

1989 Even in this year the spanish 4TL still has the old (wide and chrome) 5th door handle, chrome bumpers and chrome strips below the doors. The contents are basically the same as that of the 1988 brochure.

On the right side, a Gama folder, showing that also the furgonetas had the black strips.

198x A bit puzzling, this one, as I could not find any reference to the date of this brochure, showing a yellow TL. For the record, it has inside door hinges and the 3rd dashboard, which makes it 1983 or younger. The rims are the ones the Sixties and Savanes had, from 1985 or 1986.

It appears that after 1989, production of the R4 in Spain stopped (although they were imported from Yugoslavia for some years), so the 1989 brochures might well be the most recent ones that exist. Who knows?
